Speech Language Screening Summary

Screenings

Nearly 1 in 12 (7.7%) children ages 3 to 17 has had a speech-language disorder.  The prevalence of a disorder is highest among children ages 3 to 6 (11.0%).  Speech Language Screenings are a short measure of a child’s communication skills that takes 15-30 minutes. It includes a teacher consultation and a formal screening assessment.  Parents or designated caregivers will receive screening results that indicate how a child is functioning within age-expected norms. It may also include recommendations for either a full evaluation, monitoring for 6 months, or a referral to another professional.  Screenings can be performed at your child's private day care or school setting without a parent present as long as a permission form has been completed and signed.

Evaluations

Speech Language Evaluations are an intensive measure of a child’s communication skills that takes 1 to 2 hours. A full evaluation  includes formal and informal assessments selected based on parental concerns, a speech-language screening, a doctor's referral, and/or clinician observations and judgments.  Parents or designated caregivers will receive evaluation results that indicate how a child is functioning within age-expected norms.  It may also include recommendations for initiation of therapy services, home programs, or referral to another specialty such as an ENT.
